July 21

Our house sitters from Ireland arrived on Tuesday evening so we had a day together before we left.  Lots of good laughs!

Irene & Mark from Magherafelt, Northern Ireland

They've been in California now for 5 weeks; 3 of those weeks they were house sitting in Corona and looking after a dog called Archie.  Since they expressed interest in some day taking the train, I recorded a short video on our way to San Luis Obispo.  That section up the coast is wonderful and you can't see most of it from a road, not to mention that you go through Vandenberg Air Force Base which is a treat.

(don't know how to test the link above so not sure if it will work through this post or not)

What a travel day!  Started off with Norm slipping as he was climbing down from the top bunk on the train.  He hurt an elbow, a foot and his back.  Not fun.

Yesterday I tried to Skype John and Diane from the platform in San Luis Obispo  but my phone said Diane's computer didn't have the latest update so they couldn't see me.  The computer was updated and we tried again today.  This time we could both see and hear each other somewhat but we were travelling at about 70 mph so it was very noisy and didn't work well.  Oh well, we tried.

Although we were 2 hours late it felt like 24 hours late.  There were delays upon delays all day long. We didn't understand until late in the afternoon when one of the announcements mentioned that on Fridays there is a lot of freight traffic and freight, of course, always take first place.  The train was packed; so much so that in mid-afternoon they asked everyone in the lounge car to go back to their seats because they needed to use the lounge seats for passengers!  We were good in our bedroom so it didn't affect us.

We did have a good laugh in Klamath Falls.  When we got off the train to stretch our legs I saw the tallest man I've ever seen in my life!  I walked down the tracks to get a photo of him and as I got closer I saw that he was massaging the neck and shoulders of a woman in front of him.I didn't want to be obvious so was careful to be casual when taking his photo.  Later in the train I was able to see the photo I took (ha ha ha).

So tomorrow we explore this area a bit and then off to Victoria.
